Adventure Capitalist: the Ultimate Investor's Road Trip (Audio CD)

Rating:
Product Description
From
Publishers Weekly
Financier
Rogers retired at 37 and motorcycled around the world, turning the trip into
the book Investment Biker, a hybrid of business advice and travelogue. That
journey, however, failed to squelch his wanderlust. Instead of enjoying his
sedate life teaching finance, Rogers decided to take his fiancée and a souped-up
Mercedes on a frighteningly intense road trip: three years, 116 countries
and 152,000 miles. Like the car that plowed through snow, mud, sand and highways
on every continent, Rogers's memoir of the journey is its own breed. Although
Rogers writes, far too briefly, of life-changing events like getting married
and hearing of his father's death, the book has an uncommon level of detachment.
Also, even though Rogers shares investment advice and observations about the
planet's political economies, his thoughts are too general to serve as business
lessons. The result is an adventure tale without heart and a finance book
without teeth. Rogers tries to make up for this by describing experiences
like eating fried silkworms and watching prostitutes caught in the world's
sex trade. Mainly, though, he chronicles prosaic details, like taking car
ferries and talking to border guards, and then riffs on politics, money, immigration
and culture. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text

Soros, manager of the billion dollar Quantum Fund, certainly has credentials
that merit attention to his personal approach to money management. As might
be expected, he describes his so-called "theory of reflexivity" in a manner
more appealing to serious market players than to the casual investor. Of more
general interest is his account of a one-year real time series of investment
decisions that resulted in his Quantum Fund more than doubling in value. Libraries
serving a serious investment community should add this. Joseph Barth, U.S.

The Automatic Millionaire Homeowner: a Powerful Plan to Finish Rich in Real
Estate by David Bach
(Audio CD
- Mar 7 2006) ISBN-10:
0739324268
Rating:
Product Description
From
Publishers Weekly
This
follow-up to Bach's bestseller, The Automatic Millionaire, guides listeners
step-by-step through the transformation from renter to homeowner to landlord.
Bach's typical can-do attitude shines through, whether the book is outlining
the pros and cons of various types of mortgages or sharing the story of one
couple who used home equity as a gateway to financial independence and comfort
in retirement. Unfortunately, the audio abridgment has a few glitches, including
a misstep in the fifth chapter, which prematurely congratulates listeners
on understanding what their credit report is, before knowing how to make sure
it's accurate. This topic is not addressed until the following chapter ("Your
Credit Score: The Holy Grail of Mortgage Lending"), so listeners may understandably
be confused. Also, although actor Oliver Wyman has a beautiful voice, the
slick Casey Kasem–style delivery feels wrong for a book that rightly keeps
insisting that it is not a get-rich-quick scheme. Bach's solid and time-tested
financial advice deserves better than this infomercialesque treatment, which
seems more about style than the commonsense approach that is Bach's personal
signature. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier

The Best Investment Advice I Ever Received : Priceless Wsdom From Warren Buffett,

Product Description
From Publishers Weekly
If you can get beyond the tired investment aphorisms-"Save, save, save"
and "Buy low and sell high" both make appearances-there is some solid counsel
in CNBC anchor Claman's anthology of advice for the novice investor, but
little that will help anyone already in the thick of the market. Following
her entry on the three guiding principles of "the Greatest Investor of Our
Time," Warren Buffett, Claman hands over the reins to a roster of almost
60 contributors, all fulltime professionals with impressive credentials,
including some household names (Donald Trump among them). Many wisely advise
beginning investors to rely upon their own knowledge, common sense, research
and discipline, and to eschew relying upon their financial planner. Familiar
arguments are given for investing in no-load index funds and abandoning
fruitless quests to beat the market-the latter suggestion made in a nicely
written anecdotal piece from John C. Bogle, founder of the Vanguard group.
Others, including TV's Lawrence Kudlow, author Robert Kiyosaki, Proctor
& Gamble CEO A.G. Lafley and "Adventure Capitalist" Jim Rogers provide a
smorgasbord of similarly basic investment advice. Unfortunately, Claman's
book is an informative introduction that doesn't carry any follow-through;
investing in a more comprehensive guide would probably be sound advice for
those seeking it.

Book Description
Journalist Greg Campbell leads the reader down the international diamond trail
of brutality, horror, and profit - providing an on-the-ground and in-the-mines
story of global consequence.
First
discovered in 1930, the diamonds of Sierra Leone have funded one of the most
savage rebel campaigns in modern history. These "blood diamonds" are smuggled
out of West Africa and sold to legitimate diamond merchants in London, Antwerp,
and New York, often with the complicity of the international diamond industry.
Eventually, these very diamonds find their way into the rings and necklaces
of brides and spouses the world over. Blood Diamonds is the gripping
tale of how the diamond smuggling works, how the rebel war has effectively
destroyed Sierra Leone and its people, and how the policies of the diamond
industry - institutionalized in the 1880s by the De Beers cartel - have allowed
it to happen. Award-winning journalist Greg Campbell traces the deadly trail
of these diamonds, many of which are brought to the world market by fanatical
enemies, including the Al Qaeda network. These repercussions of diamond smuggling
are felt far beyond the borders of the poor and war-ridden country of Sierra
Leone, and the consequences of overlooking this African tragedy, as the world
has seen, are both shockingly deadly and unquestionably global. --This

previous booms--and busts. What did the founders of Moody's, Value Line, and

This insider's glimpse into the manipulative world of branding is sedately
delivered by reader Lloyd James in a bland, occasionally smirking tone.
This seems appropriate, as author Levine, a marketing guru, has "handled"
movie star and rock star clients (Michael Jackson, among others), corporate
public relations disasters, and major product launches. He's rather smug
about it all. James walks us through the creation and cold-blooded branding
of a fictional brand of ice cream to illustrate the "creation of a superbrand,"
a quasi- psy-ops project that requires marketers to second-guess every
nuance of public response. While full of useful pointers, A BRANDED WORLD
suffers from its manipulative approach to marketing. D.J.B. © AudioFile

Warren Buffett amassed one of the epochal fortunes of the 20th century --
an astounding net worth of $10 billion and counting. That awesome record has
made him a cult figure.
This
illuminating biography reveals a man whose conscientiousness, integrity, and
good humor exist alongside an odd emotional isolation. Buffett also
masterfully traces his life: his enormously successful partnership; his early,
inspired investments in American Express and Geico; his companionship and
investment with Katharine Graham of the Washington Post; his role in
the Capital Cities purchase of ABC; his unique relationship with his wife
and mistress; and his rescue of the scandal-ridden Salomon Brothers. --This

help readers prepare individual fiscal agendas keep the focus on making proper
choices and developing workable plans. Utilizing his 40 years of financial

explains the ins and outs of planning an investment, choosing the components

What do Ted Turner and Rupert Murdoch want out of life? Apart from the usual
pleasures--love, fortune, good health--they apparently want to control the
world's media. And, to judge by this account, each wants the other's head
on a platter.
"In another time, they might have dueled on a
grassy plain with muskets, or faced each other at high noon at opposite ends
of a dusty street, holsters slung low on their hips," writes media/entertainment
pundit Hack. Turner and Murdoch have chosen to fight it out, with undisguised
venom, in a singularly public venue--Turner through CNN and other networks,
Murdoch through Sky and Fox TV, plus a host of magazines and newspapers. Turner
espouses liberal views while Murdoch is a hard-line conservative, but both
are supreme "controllers of information" and "manipulators of public opinion,"
according to Hack. Their fight has cost billions of dollars, and it's wounded
more than a few bystanders. It has also, as Hack rightly notes, set the tone
for the contemporary press, for the worse, sacrificing journalistic integrity
in the interest of two "competing political agendas ... until there is one.

This program takes a fundamental view of what it takes to be a top-drawer
business worthy of your investment dollar. It's based on traditional company
variables like capitalization, market position, and labor relations, and some
new variables like organizational adaptability and leadership depth and vision.
The broad thinking and nuances are so intuitive and clearly drawn that listeners
won't even realize how abstract and intelligent this writing is. The impressive
piece of work is nicely abridged, and George Guidall is as connected to the
material as anyone could be. Still, this is not for the cognitively challenged,

Day trading such stocks as Amazon.com, eBay, and Yahoo! sounds like a
game for the gun slinger: jump into the fray and pull the trigger. Is that
really the case? No, according to author Christopher Farrell, who earns his
money just as Wall Street does--by making very small, short-term, high-percentage
trades. Farrell, who works from home, has traded over 15,000,000 shares of
stock via the Internet, producing a 65 percent annual return for his investment
fund in its first year. Using detailed, user-friendly examples, Farrell shows
how to place orders online and then sell minutes later for small profits that
can potentially add up to thousands of dollars a day--if you pick the
right stocks. He explains how the New York Stock Exchange allows traders to
buy on the bid and sell at the offer, just like the professionals. Farrell
also includes loads of tips, such as how to choose an online broker, how much
to pay for commissions, and how to cope with a technology that's still in
its infancy. If you've been thinking about joining the estimated 5 million
online traders, then this book is for you. --Thom Hartle --This

Ric Edelman believes you can't create a truly effective personal finance
plan until you really know what you want out of life. In Discover the
Wealth Within You he shows how to develop a realistic series of individualized
goals for your future, and then how to construct an investment program to
help you realize them. Edelman, author of New York Times bestsellers
Ordinary People, Extraordinary Wealth and
The Truth About Money, draws on these books to explain why we're
ultimately more successful with our financial agenda when we focus on it
as a means to an array of unambiguous objectives (such as "see an event
in person during the next Winter Olympics" or "have plastic surgery in three
years") rather than vague long-range aspirations (like saving "for retirement"
or to "buy a house"). In the first section he unveils a step-by-step process
for determining the precise objectives that motivate us; in the second he
points us toward a mutual-fund-based savings plan that should be easier
to capitalize consistently because we know where it's taking us and when
we'll get there. Incorporating a profusion of appropriate cartoon strips,
inspirational testimonials, persuasive statistics, and an unusual assembly
of footnotes that are as amusing as they are informative, Edelman offers
a clear and innovative course of action that could turn even procrastinating
wannabes into enthusiastic money managers. --Howard Rothman

Rating:

Economics is not widely considered to be one of the sexier sciences. The annual
Nobel Prize winner in that field never receives as much publicity as his or
her compatriots in peace, literature, or physics. But if such slights are
based on the notion that economics is dull, or that economists are concerned
only with finance itself, Steven D. Levitt will change some minds. In Freakonomics
(written with Stephen J. Dubner), Levitt argues that many apparent mysteries
of everyday life don't need to be so mysterious: They could be illuminated
and made even more fascinating by asking the right questions and drawing connections.
For example, Levitt traces the drop in violent crime rates to a drop in violent
criminals and, digging further, to the Roe v. Wade decision that preempted
the existence of some people who would be born to poverty and hardship. Elsewhere,
by analyzing data gathered from innercity Chicago drug-dealing gangs, Levitt
outlines a corporate structure much like McDonald's, where the top bosses
make great money while scores of underlings make something below minimum wage.
And in a section that may alarm or relieve worried parents, Levitt argues
that parenting methods don't really matter much and that a backyard swimming
pool is much more dangerous than a gun. These enlightening chapters are separated
by effusive passages from Dubner's 2003 profile of Levitt in The New York
Times Magazine, which led to the book being written. In a book filled
with bold logic, such back-patting veers Freakonomics, however briefly,
away from what Levitt actually has to say. Although maybe there's a good economic
reason for that too, and we're just not getting it yet. --John Moe

Rating:

From Amazon.com
Anyone mystified by stock options or who simply dismisses them as too speculative
will find Getting Started in Options an excellent first read on the
subject. Beginning with the premise that it's not the complexity of the investment
but that of its language that makes options difficult for new investors to
understand, author Michael C. Thomsett has created a guided tour through the
lexicon. The result is a nontechnical introduction to these specialized markets.

Greed
is Good: The Capitalist Pig Guide to Investing
by Jonathan Hoenig (Audio
Cassette
- May 6 1999)
ISBN-10: 0694521647
Rating:

From
Amazon.com
Greed, in Jonathan Hoenig's estimation, is passion.
It's lust. It has nothing to do with single-minded accumulation and everything
to do with freedom, with the ability to pursue the things that make you happy.
Hoenig received his first real introduction to greed while working at Starbucks
as a teenager. He found that the money he earned after buying a few shares
of Starbucks stock greatly exceeded what he made as an after-school wage slave.
While in college, he started a radio show called Capitalist Pig, which
now plays in 18 states. Greed has been good to Hoenig.
In Greed Is Good, he wants to share the
wealth with his post-baby-boom generation by preaching the gospel of investing.
But investing isn't just about choosing mutual fund A over mutual fund B.
It's about not spending money on useless stuff, leaving more money for the
things that are meaningful. Hoenig understands how frills like designer clothes,
CDs, and, yes, Starbucks coffee can seem like necessities, when really they're
lifestyle add-ons that can be eliminated. Doing without such excesses can
be painful, but that's something else Hoenig believes in; not only is greed
good, so is discipline, sacrifice, and self-denial. Greed is written
in an eclectic style that includes Yiddish phrases, street slang, and generational
cultural references ("Whatchu talkin' 'bout, Willis?"), which serves two purposes:
it's very entertaining to read, and renders the often-dry message of "Save
and invest" infinitely more palatable. --Lou Schuler --This text

How to Make Money in Stocks : A Winning System in Good Times or Bad
by William J. O'Neil (Audio
CD - Jun 25 2003) ISBN-10: 0972488928
Rating:

From Amazon.com
From the school of unemotional investing comes the classic How to Make
Money in Stocks, by Wall Street analyst and publisher William O'Neil.
Readers new to securities will find it an excellent primer, one that relies
on time-honored indicators such as quarterly earnings, market capitalization,
and daily indexes. O'Neil's study of winning stocks stretches back to the
1960s, and he shares his insights here, describing what characterizes a growth
stock, when to cut your losses (at 7 or 8 percent, no more), and how to spot
a market top.
The
techniques in How to Make Money in Stocks are hardly revolutionary,
but therein lies their strength, as O'Neil claims his is "a winning system
in good times or bad." Investors interested in Net stocks might be disappointed--the
author's first rule is that a company must show a pattern of growing profits,
which disqualifies many dot coms. (Try
Rule Breakers, Rule Makers for a different take.) O'Neil's approach
to stocks is, above all, rational, and he pays little heed to market hype.
Those
new to investing would do well to read this book before embarking, and even
more seasoned traders may find How to Make Money in Stocks a refreshing
return to basics. Markets may swing bull and bear, but O'Neil promises to
stand firm. --Demian McLean --This text refers to the

For very savvy investors, comfortable in the complex world of investing in
stocks, Graja and Ungar present an excellent resource focusing on a niche
in the investment worldAsmall-cap stocks. This term defines small companies
having a total capitalization of less than $1 billion. Advice from top money
managers in reputable investment firms on how to get the most value out of
these stocks is succinctly summarized here, including tips on picking the
winners, managing the volatility of smaller companies, finding "cheap" stocks
ready for gain, and integrating these small caps into a larger portfolio of
diverse investments. The brisk narration of this very technical but very useful

In the investment-management business, it's best to take bows quickly. Unless,
of course, you're John Neff, a living legend, who as manager of Vanguard's
Windsor Fund beat the market in 22 out of 31 years. Neff grew Windsor to become
the largest mutual fund by combing the bargain basement for quality merchandise
and selling as other investors caught on. In John Neff on Investing,
he explains how he scoured the daily list of stocks hitting new lows, the
"dusty rag and bone shop of the market," to find out-of-favor companies with
low price/earnings ratios, those growing faster than seven percent a year,
that paid generous dividends. He shows how to distinguish misunderstood and
overlooked stocks from those with lackluster prospects.

The Little Book That Beats the Market
by Joel Greenblatt and Adam Grupper (Audio
CD
- Jan 30 2006)
ISBN-10:
0743555856
Rating:

From Publishers Weekly
Contrary to efficient-market naysayers, this engaging investment primer contends
that ordinary stock-market investors can indeed get better-than-market returns
over the long haul. Greenblatt (You Can Be a Stock Market Genius),
a Columbia Business School adjunct professor, touts a "value-oriented" approach
that looks for bargain stocks whose share price is cheap relative to the company's
profitability. His version is a "magic formula" that ranks stocks on the basis
of two variables—the earnings yield and the business's return on capital.
His Web site, magicformulainvesting.com, virtually automates the procedure
for novices. Greenblatt offers lots of statistical proof of the formula's
success, but emphasizes the importance of faith in seeing the investor through
inevitable short-term downturns: "It will be your belief in the overwhelming
logic of the magic formula that will make the formula work for you in the
long run." He conveys his ideas through a lucid if rudimentary and rather
corny explanation of basic investment concepts about risk, return, interest
and business valuation. Although the fabulous returns he touts seem too good
to be true, Greenblatt's formula is a reasonable variant of mainstream value-investing
methods. Investors seeking a little more hands-on excitement than the average
mutual fund offers won't go too far wrong following his advice. (Jan.)

The Motley Fool's What To Do with Your Money Now : Ten Steps to Staying Up
in a Down Market
by Tom Gardner and David Gardner (Audio

Rating:

From Amazon.com
Go back in time for a minute, when the Motley Fool's last big investment book
was first published in January 1999. The NASDAQ was hovering at around 2300,
stocks like Cisco and Microsoft were leading the markets up, and the Motley
Fool had four books on Amazon's bestseller lists, including
Rule Breakers, Rule Makers, which for that month was listed at No.
3. Since then, the stock market has boomed and crashed, the economy has sunk
in and out of recession, and millions of investors (including the Fools) have
watched their stock portfolios shrink. In What to Do with Your Money Now,
the Gardner brothers draw lessons from the mistakes that lead to the bust
and offer a plethora of advice aimed at guiding investors in this more sober
economic environment. Much of what they recommend echoes the practical advice
offered in their earlier books (e.g., create a financial plan, get out of
debt), while other prescriptions offer a truer reflection of the times (e.g.,
consider CDs, invest in high-dividend stocks as well as bond and index funds).
While the events of the last few years have humbled the Fools somewhat, they've
lost none of their trademark humor, and fans and newcomers alike should find
lots to latch onto in this book. --Harry C. Edwards --This text

Networth : Successful Investing in the Companies That Will Prevail Through

ISBN-10:
0743518268

While most investors avoid Internet stocks like the plague, Wall Street
Journal and CNBC correspondent Stephen Frank thinks the sector is worth
a second look. In NetWorth, Frank sorts through the wreckage of the
dot-com crash and offers a framework by which savvy investors can assess who
the winners will be in the next few years. Frank's basic premise: the Internet
is here to stay, and that every company will in some way soon be an Internet
company. He begins the book with an insightful chapter on the merger of AOL
and Time Warner, calling the new company "the paradigm of the new economy."
Frank then examines all the categories of Internet stocks and the companies
within, including consumer (Amazon.com, Yahoo!, E-Trade), business to business
(Ariba, I2, DoubleClick), and infrastructure companies (Akamai, Oracle, VeriSign).
In all, NetWorth is a useful overview of this downtrodden sector that
should interest anyone with a long investing horizon and a contrarian point
of view. --Harry C. Edwards --This text refers to an out of print

The New Golden Age: The Coming Revolution Against Political Corruption and
Economic Chaos by Ravi Batra and Brian Emerson
(Audio CD - Jan 2007)
ISBN-10: 0786161914
No Rating
From Publishers Weekly
After nearly 20 years of predicting economic disaster, Batra ( Greenspan's
Fraud, etc.) suggests a reversal, though only after we rise up in revolution
against the forces of chaos. This time, he charges politicians, academics,
business executives and rich people with "corruption," defined as "any policy
that enriches the rich and impoverishes the poor and the middle class."
Among the practices Batra censures are raising congressional pay but not
the minimum wage, and cutting income taxes while increasing Social Security
taxes. Though the analysis is keen and provocative and the conclusions unorthodox
as ever, his specific economic predictions aren't likely to be any better
than those in his 11 previous books. Though he admits that "three or four"
of his previous predictions "have been wrong," and "the cycle of depression
has misfired," he gives no specifics. His examples of successful predictions
sidestep his previous books, citing anecdotes from unrecorded private conversations.
Some readers might wish Batra would stick to analysis and exposition, at
which he excels, and leave off the name-calling and the wild predictions
that mar this effort. (Feb.)

Stanley and William Danko found themselves sitting atop the best-seller charts
with The Millionaire Next Door: The Surprising Secrets of America's Wealthy
(1996), in which they profiled the surprisingly frugal lifestyles and spending
habits of America's "hidden" millionaires. Now Edelman hopes to garner the
same attention with this survey of 5,000 of his clients who are "predominately
middle-class" but successful investors. Edelman, a financial planner and popular
talk-show host, is already the author of The New Rules of Money: 88 Strategies

Public Enemies by Bryan Burrough
and Campbell Scott (Audio
Cassette - Jul 19 2004) ISBN-10: 0743527402

Book Description
The astonishing true story of America's first
and greatest "War on Crime."
In Public Enemies, Bryan Burrough strips
away a thick layer of myths put out by J. Edgar Hoover's FBI to tell the full
story of the most spectacular crime wave in American history, the two-year
battle between the young Hoover and an assortment of criminals who became
national icons: John Dillinger, Machine Gun Kelly, Bonnie and Clyde, Baby
Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd, and the Barkers.
In 1933, police jurisdictions ended at state
lines, the FBI was in its infancy, and fast cars and machine guns were easily
available. It was a great time to be a bank robber. On hand were a motley
crew of criminal masterminds, sociopaths, romantics, and cretins.
Bryan Burrough has unearthed an extraordinary
amount of new material on all the major figures involved -- revealing many
fascinating interconnections in the vast underworld ecosystem that stretched
from Texas up to Minnesota.
But the real-life connections were insignificant
next to the sense of connectedness J. Edgar Hoover worked to create in the
mind of the American public-using the "Great Crime Wave" to gain the position
of untouchable power he would occupy for almost half a century.

From Amazon.com
The rich are different from the rest of us, if for no other reason than U.S.
tax and securities laws allow them to invest in ways that keep us from catching
up to them. That's why 90 percent of all corporate shares of stock are owned
by 10 percent of the people. Kiyosaki believes it's possible for anyone to
move up into that 10 percent, but it takes a different view of investing than
most people have: it takes a plan to be a successful investor. And a plan
is more than simply buying and selling, or collecting "assets" that bring
in no cash and are thus more akin to liabilities. The way most people invest,
"they might as well be pushing a wheelbarrow in a circle," he writes. A plan
is "mechanical, automatic, and boring," a formula for success that has worked
historically for most of those who've used it. Kiyosaki's "rich dad" (actually,
the father of his best friend) tells him the simplest analogy is the game
Monopoly: buy four green houses, trade them for one red hotel, and repeat
until you become rich.

Rich Dad's Who Took My Money?
by Robert T Kiyosaki (Audio
CD
- May 1 2004)
ISBN-10: 1586216511
Rating:

From Booklist
The eighth book in the Rich Dad series reveals the financial wisdom of the
rich, which is neither taught in schools nor discussed in the popular financial
press. The authors begin with an example of the Zen master-student relationship
that Kiyosaki had with his Rich Dad mentor. Kiyosaki had made the mistake
of many inexperienced investors and bought into a mutual fund he knew nothing
about; his Rich Dad let him stay with the bad investment for months to learn
the lesson of patience. Kiyosaki also learned that the common advice to "invest
for the long term, buy, hold and diversify" is not really advice but actually
a sales pitch, and it teaches very little about how to become a smart investor.
The reason most people continue to choose mutual-fund investing is because
it is so easy, and that is also why it is inherently risky. Kiyosaki and his
coauthor emphasize investing in asset classes other than equities, such as
a business venture, real estate, and paper assets like hedge funds and options.
These approaches require more thought, education, and effort than does simply
handing one's money over to a financial company and allowing a stranger to
control it, but the risks are lower and the potential financial rewards can
be much greater. Certain to be in demand at the circulation desk. David

The Savage Truth on Money
by Terry Savage and Anna Fields (Audio
CD -
Sep 2000)
ISBN-10: 0786198532
Rating:

From Amazon.com
Whether it's the invisible chat room jockey pumping penny stocks or the silver-haired
Peter Lynch hawking Fidelity Investments, finding financial advice these days
is pretty easy, and for most of us the real problem is not getting advice,
it's getting good advice. Which is something that Terry Savage dispenses
in good measure in The Savage Truth on Money.
It's not that Savage has found a new way to
get rich. She hasn't. What makes this book work is her commonsense approach
to attaining financial security. At the heart of Savage's advice is the notion
that getting ahead is a matter of "self-discipline," which "means making knowledgeable
decisions based on a rational assessment of likely results and then sticking
to your decisions in the face of emotional upheaval." Forget about sticking
your head in the sand--for Savage, knowledge is power, and knowledge begins
when you examine your own relationship to money. She encourages getting online
as way to manage your finances, educate yourself, and seek out new opportunities.
The book is filled with insights on topics such as risk management, investing
in mutual funds, saving for college, and buying insurance.
Savage's experience as a financial journalist
(print, television, online), stockbroker, the first woman member of the Chicago
Board Options Exchange, as well as her service on the Board of Directors of
McDonald's and Devon Energy Corporation brings a air of credibility that's
hard to find in books of this ilk. The Savage Truth on Money is for
people who think seriously about their money, no matter how smart they think
they are. --Harry C. Edwards --This text refers to an out of print

Book Description
With unprecedented accessincluding personal interviews with Donald Trump himselfone
of the nations leading business journalists reveals the good, the bad, and
most of all, the ridiculous truth behind the public image of The Donald. Whatever
anyone thinks of Donald Trump, the truth is far more complexand fascinating.
Instead of society nightlife, most evenings hes at home watching TV and munching
Oreos. He has a line of clothing and bottled water emblazoned with his image,
yet he needed a loan from his siblings to stay afloat. His name is featured
on some of the worlds most magnificent buildings and casinos, while a $1.8
billion debt hangs over his company. Hell use a friends cell phone to save
money on a call. Hell call a journalist a total whack job on television, then
turn around and invite him to fly down to Palm Beach on his private jet. These
are the contradictions of Trumps world, and beneath the public faade, theres
a man few people ever see. Now, New York Times business reporter Timothy L.
OBrien pulls back the velvet curtain surrounding The Donaldwith access rarely
granted to a reporter beforeand takes the polish off the image of Americas
so called most popular billionaire.

It's no secret that most mutual funds fail to beat the performance of the
S&P 500. And if the pros can't beat the averages, it's not unreasonable to
assume that most individual investors can't, either. Why? According to Robert
Hagstrom, author of The Warren Buffett Portfolio, a big reason is the
industry's emphasis on diversification. In the interest of minimizing risk,
many investors have "become intellectually numb to its inevitable consequence:
mediocre results." As a result, they wind up owning too many stocks and churn
their portfolios unnecessarily (for example, the average mutual fund holds
100 stocks and turns over 80 percent of its portfolio annually). In The
Warren Buffett Portfolio, Hagstrom shows how Buffett and others use the
idea of focus investing to organize winning portfolios.

Your Money Matters: 21 Tips for Achieving Financial Security in the 21st Century
by Jonathan Pond (Audio
Cassette
- Jan 2000)
ISBN-10: 0671047949
Rating:

From Amazon.com
Your Money Matters, by prolific financial author and TV commentator
Jonathan Pond, proposes a 21-point money-management program for those nearing
retirement age as well as those for whom retirement is still a distant consideration.
With humor and a clever division of the particulars into tip-packed chapters
bearing such titles as "Live Beneath Your Means (Without Depriving Yourself),"
"Learn How to Tolerate Your Loved One's Annoying Financial Habits," and "Bulls
Make Money, Bears Make Money, but Pigs and Lambs Get Slaughtered," Pond dispenses
a wealth of practical data on handling "the most important financial matters
that you'll need to attend to in the 21st century." A bold claim, but one
backed up with a slew of sensible suggestions for increasing your savings
and apportioning the resultant nest egg to provide comfortably for your future
needs. Along the way, Pond offers opinions and outlines applicable strategies
on issues including technology stocks as a viable investment, the need for
long-term-care insurance, and the best ways to fund a child's education or
the care for an aging parent. He also includes pointers to pages on his Web
site that offer additional information on health-insurance plans, home-equity
loans, investment-allocation procedures, and many other supportive issues.
